7 Signs It's Time to Upgrade Your Office Network Infrastructure

An aging network infrastructure quietly drains productivity and opens security gaps. Here are seven clear signs your Chicago business is overdue for a network upgrade — and what to expect when you make the move.

Your office network is the foundation everything else runs on. When it's working well, it's invisible. When it's not, every employee feels it — in slow uploads, dropped video calls, frustrated sighs, and workarounds that waste time. The problem is that network degradation is gradual, so many businesses don't realize how bad things have gotten until they're genuinely impaired.

Here are seven signs that your network infrastructure needs attention, along with a clear picture of what a modern upgrade looks like.

Sign 1: Persistently Slow Internet Speeds (Even With a Fast Plan)

You upgraded to a 500 Mbps fiber connection, but speed tests show 40 Mbps at users' desktops. Where did the rest go?

Often, the bottleneck isn't the internet circuit — it's the equipment between the wall jack and the user's computer. Aging routers and switches can't saturate modern internet connections. An old 100 Mbps switch limits every connected device to 100 Mbps maximum, regardless of your ISP speed. Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps) switches were standard ten years ago; Gigabit (1,000 Mbps) or multi-Gigabit (2.5/5/10 Gbps) switches are the current standard.

Sign 2: WiFi Dead Zones or Unreliable Wireless

If employees have specific spots in the office where WiFi works and spots where it doesn't, or if walking across the floor drops their connection, your wireless infrastructure is undersized, aging, or improperly configured.

Consumer-grade routers placed ad-hoc around an office are a common culprit — they broadcast on the same channels, interfering with each other. Modern enterprise access point systems (Meraki, Aruba, Ubiquiti) coordinate automatically through a cloud controller, eliminating overlap and ensuring seamless roaming as users move around the office.

Sign 3: Outdated Switches and Routers Running End-of-Life Firmware

Network equipment from major vendors has a defined support lifecycle. When a product reaches End of Life (EOL), the vendor stops releasing security patches for it. Running EOL network equipment is a cybersecurity risk, not just a performance issue.

  • Cisco switches from the Catalyst 3560/3750 series (EOL in 2020)
  • Linksys/Cisco Small Business RV-series routers

If a breach, malware incident, or unauthorized access event was made possible by a network configuration weakness — flat network architecture, missing VLANs, unprotected guest WiFi, default credentials on network equipment — that's an urgent signal that your infrastructure needs a security-focused redesign.

Modern network best practice includes:

  • Network segmentation via VLANs (separate voice, data, guest, IoT, and servers)
  • Next-generation firewall (NGFW) with intrusion prevention
  • 802.1X authentication so unauthorized devices can't connect to the LAN
  • Encrypted management interfaces and changed default credentials on all equipment

Sign 6: Your Business Has Grown Significantly

If your headcount has doubled, you've added a new location, or you've taken on new applications (VoIP, video surveillance, cloud ERP, remote access), your network was designed for a different business than the one you run today.

Networks should be sized and designed for anticipated 3-year growth, not just current headcount. The cost of redesigning a network once is far less than repeatedly patching an infrastructure that's fundamentally too small.
